The Commissioning Process

"Please feel free to telephone, drop me an email or visit my studio, to discuss any ideas you may have. We can discuss: your ideas; the size; the different forms of glasswork; the varied types of glass suited to your requirements.

With this information I will work out the cost of your bespoke piece and provide you with a detailed quote. After your initial consultation and once you have my quote and are happy to continue, a deposit is required to finalise the commission.

I will then produce a full size coloured cartoon design and a further meeting will be required at this point to make sure you are happy with everything.

Once you have agreed the design, I can begin the manufacturing process taking great care and pride to produce a wonderful piece of Glass Art unique to you, or a reproduction with a new lease of life inspired by you.

Whatever type of glasswork appeals to you, be it traditional or contemporary, I am more than happy to discuss your requirements. I can create a design of your choice using various ideas and styles and I very much look forward to working with you."

Traditional Stained Glass leaded Work

Stained glass is a unique art form that depends entirely on light to bring out its hidden beauty and wonderful array of colours. As light streams in through a stained glass window or panel, the room is filled with streaks of vivid colours. As the angle of the suns rays changes during the day, the character of the window or panel can be completely transformed.

Traditional stained glass is the art of cutting glass into different shapes and fitting them into channeled lead strips. The panel is built up and the joints soldered together. Putty is applied between the lead came and the glass to secure and seal the panel.

It can be framed, suspended by chain or built into a door or window.

Copper foil work

is another process often referred to as 'tiffany style' which involves foiling the edges of the cut glass with copper foil and soldering the whole finished piece. This lends itself well to intricate and detailed designs and is also common in lamp work, light catchers and jewellery boxes etc.

There is a huge and varied selection of coloured and textured glass available today for stained glass work including, translucent; opaque; wispy; iridescent and beveled.

Kiln Fired Fused Glass

Fusing is the process of joining two or more pieces of glass through melting in a kiln. There are different techniques used to create flat objects by superimposing layers of glass.

Slumping is the technique of imparting shape to the glass. Molds are used to form the glass in the kiln to create bowls, plates and platters for example.

Dichroic Fused Glass

Dichroic glass is glass that is coated with metallic oxides such as titanium, magnesium and silicon. Dichroic means 'two colours' and the glass is called that because it reflects one colour while transmitting another. The glass is fired in a kiln to fuse the pieces together or form the glass over or into molds. Dichroic glass is used in jewellery making and in decorative pieces such as bowls, plates and tiles. It can also be added to panels for unique features.

Glass Tessarae Mosaic

Glass Tessarae is the collective name for small tiles that when placed close together goes to make up the mosaic design. There is a huge variety of coloured glass tiles to choose from. The glass tiles are cut and carefully laid out and glued down onto plain glass or other surface to a specific design idea. Grouting is the final process and can transform the mosaic. Plain grays or coloured grout can be used.

Mosaics can be made into large scale murals or smaller hanging panels; 3D sculpture and decorative table tops.
